Fresh chestnuts for eating and chestnut trees both grafted and as seedlings,
form our core products. During the months of October, November, and December
we have fresh chestnuts for sale. From December through March we have bare
root chestnut trees for sale. Starting in January and continuing until the
end of May we have chestnut scion wood available for sale. During the normal
growing season (May through September) we have potted grafted chestnut trees
available. As you can see, no matter what month in the year it is we are in
the chestnut business.
Our fresh chestnuts can be purchased by the pound or in the bulk. Our minimum
order for fresh chestnuts is 5 lbs. There are two size groups for the
chestnuts, small (less than 1 inch across), and large (greater than 1 inch
across). Our production chestnut trees are European x Japanese hybrids
providing the sweetness and flavor of the European chestnuts and the large
size of the Japanese chestnuts. The cool Pacific Northwest provides growing
conditions similar to conditions found in the mountains ranges of Europe
where chestnuts have been a food of tradition for over 1000 years.
Our chestnut trees produce great tasting sweet chestnuts. You too can have
your own sweet chestnut producing chestnut trees. Since 2006 we have been
propagating chestnut trees. Chestnut trees are easy to grow and require
almost no maintenance. Some of the chestnut trees will grow to about 40 feet
high and some of the more upright trees will grow to over 80 feet tall. All
chestnut trees can be kept small by annual pruning. Here is a list of the
chestnut cultivars we are offering:

Chestnut tree scion wood sales start in January and continue until the end of
May. Each stick has an average of 5 buds per stick. You must graft this onto a
chestnut tree. No other trees are compatible. From initial graft to producing
the first chestnuts takes 3-4 years. Full production is 12-20 years depending
growing conditions. There are many web sites that can aid you with learning
how to graft. In a study conducted in 2010 on our farm, the cleft grafting
technique provides the best results with chestnut trees. Make sure the day
time temps are at least 70 degrees and the chestnut trees are actively growing
(first true leaves are fully extended from the branch).
